v/ART/5c24f6d07feae?in\_archive=1 The Assistant Teacher is an individual who may not be qualified by the KDHE to be alone with a group of children and lead a classroom, but is 18 years of age or older and has a high school diploma or GED.
Assistant Teachers may have prior experience in working within the early childhood age group, but may also be new to the field.
Assistant Teachers report directly to the Child Care Director and will be directed in day to day classroom operations by the Lead Teacher.
They also may be asked to take direction from the Team Lead.
Assistant Teachers are responsible for a wide variety of supports in the classroom.
Depending on their experience level they may do any or all of the following tasks; assisting with diaper and toileting duties, cleaning up after meals and activities, room organization, prepping activity materials for the Lead Teacher, assisting in small group activities, modeling appropriate behavior, having fun with the children, helping gather children’s belongings at the end of the day and accepting feedback for personal growth in the position.
Assistant Teachers are the key to Lead Teachers being able to teach effectively without spending all of their time in organizing and cleaning.
They are a very important part of any well run classroom.
*ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:* Adherence to legal and educational requirements to ensure students’ well-being.
Cooperation with program and USD policies and procedures that govern the overall program.
\* Helps to follow the classroom schedule and supports the Lead Teacher in achieving a balance of quiet and active learning experiences, by modeling appropriate behaviors (sitting with the group at table time or circle time) and by helping to redirect children’s participations so that the Lead Teacher can continue with the lesson.
\* Assists the Lead Teacher as requested to do activities and to do observations and regular documentation of children’s skill levels.
Helps to prepare materials and activities, contribute ideas and gather or clean up materials for the Lead Teacher.
Assistant Teachers should be prepared to step into a situation and occupy the children for a few minutes with songs or activities if the Lead Teacher needs to deal with a parent, phone call or the Director.
\* Takes direction, asks for clarification and takes personal responsibility to grow in their skills and abilities as an Early Childhood Professional.
Stays busy and follows all guidelines within the program.
\* Cooperation with other programs and employees within the school to allow for smooth operation of the program.
\* Responsibility for following all health and safety protocols including but not limited to; emergency information on each child including possible allergies kept up to date, cleaning and health protocols followed, emergency drills and the roles for each adult understood and followed.
*EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:* Assistant Teachers must have a passion for early childhood development and preferably have worked with this age group before.
\* Assistant Teachers are required by the KDHE to have a minimum of a high school diploma or GED.
They also must have one 18-hour course on the Foundations of Child Development and an Infant /Child CPR and First Aid certification within the first 30 days of employment.
\* Assistant Teachers must have excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to take correction with a learning perspective.
\* Assistant Teachers need to have strong problem-solving skills and a positive mind-set as well as a calm and loving demeanor with children.
*GENERAL INFORMATION:* Teaching positions in a childcare program are always fluid and changeable.
At any time a teacher may need to change plans, shift to another classroom or slightly adjust their hours to provide for the supervision of the children.
\* Lunch breaks are planned at times to be the least disruptive for the classroom activities.
Occasionally, due to the variable nature of childcare programs breaks may at times be suspended due to staffing issues.
State law prohibits leaving a classroom without proper supervision even if your shift is scheduled to be over or if it is your scheduled break time.
All teachers must adhere to proper adult to child ratios.
\* All childcare employees are mandated reporters in regard to suspicion of child maltreatment or neglect.
\* All positions include “any other assigned tasks” as required by the program to operate effectively.
\* _*Lansing Preschool and Child Care Center reserves the right to change this job description as needed.
