This is a very cool vintage railroad level for checking the grade or pitch on the train tracks as they were laid.
Other inclinometers that I have had were fancy models and in great condition and I assume they were gently used by an inspector.
This one has been well used although still in great shape.
The condition makes me imagine that it was carried and used as the tracks were laid.
It’s marked UPRR in two places.
It’s my understanding that Union Pacific used the UPRR designation until they were done building the Transcontinental Railroad in the mid/late 1800s so this is a very old piece of history.
They then changed the name to Union Pacific Railway and used the UPR designation.
It’s also marked with what looks like EV.
6- 66 and the brass level bubble is marked Empire 58”R
It measures 62 1/2” long and the brass elevation ruler is graduated up to 7”
This is an awesome piece of railroading and American history and will make a very nice addition to your collection.
If you know of a nice train museum please let me know or show them this ad and have them contact me.
