One of the first questions I will ask you is what type of material do you want your project built with? Let me explain a couple of the most common options:
-Cedar-
Cedar is a very durable wood and it holds up great in the outdoors.
The natural oils in cedar makes it resistant to rot, decay, insects, and it resists moisture.
Cedar does cost more than other options.
However, cedar is much lower maintenance.
Cedar is my favorite wood to look at.
And without question cedar has the best fragrance.
-Pressure Treated Pine-
Pine lumber has a chemical preservative forced into it.
This forms a barrier to resist rot, decay and wood-eating insects like termites, carpenter ants, etc.
This option is certainly the most cost effective option.
